The surface quality, density, and texture of the paper determine how the ink takes to the surface Whiteness, resistance to moisture distortion, and longevity are also important considerations Thicker papers and papers with more rag content (the amount of cloth versus wood pulp content in the paper) will take large amounts of ink without distorting or wrinkling Some papers are absorbent, which diffuses the color, while others keep the ink on the surface to allow for crisper detail Each paper will affect how the color looks and can change the actual color of the print, often drastically If you are printing text and simple graphics, you can use a less expensive paper, because the demands on the coverage of ink are much less On the other hand, if you are printing larger, complex color images like photographs, you will need paper that is stable (acid free), that is coated so that it can hold the minute detail, and that is white enough to provide clear, saturated color You can get that kind of quality only by using the more expensive papers that are designed expressly for printing photographs Special Ink Inkjet printers can use a number of types of inks, depending on your intended final product Dye-based inks (most common because of their ability to produce a wider range of brightness) are chemically derived, pigment-based inks that use natural pigments like artist paints (longest lasting, but compatible only with very specific printers), and hybrid inks that combine both and are compatible with a somewhat wider range of printers Hybrid inks are the latest generation of inks and are designed to optimize printer performance while also offering permanent color (See Tip 97 later in this chapter for more on archival inks) The print head nozzle openings in an inkjet printer are microscopically small, so the ink needs to be very refined to pass through without clogging the nozzles Color concentration and accuracy are also important to the color quality of the final print You want ink that is going to be consistent from one cartridge to another The final color result is always going to be a combination of the inks and the paper you print on Each printer manufacturer calibrates its printers to a particular ink standard, so you need to use ink that is approved for use with your printer Inkjet printers use a variety of ink cartridges that can change with every brand and model You must use the appropriate type of cartridge for your printer, so make sure you have printer model and/or cartridge model number handy when you want to purchase new ink cartridges.
